Fence panel and baseline post calculator
Estimate repeated panels and line-post positions from a measured fence path and total gate openings.
Direct answer
Subtract total gate-opening width from the measured fence path, divide by panel length, and round up. Treat corner, end, gate, slope, bracing, footing, and safety-specific posts separately.

Panels = ceiling(max(path length - gate openings, 0) / panel length); baseline line positions = panels + 1.
Worked example
A 180 ft path with 8 ft of gates leaves 172 ft. At 8 ft per panel, ceiling(21.5) gives 22 panels and 23 baseline line positions before special posts.
Assumptions
- The path is measured along the fence line.
- Panels may be cut to close the remaining length.
- Baseline positions describe one continuous line only.
Caveats
- Corners, ends, gates, slopes, wind, bracing, footings, property boundaries, and utilities change the design.
- Pool barriers require specific verified safety features and local compliance.
- Obtain a survey and utility location before installation.
