Purchase area before package rounding = net area x (1 + waste allowance).

Worked example

1,000 sq ft with an 8% allowance produces 1,080 sq ft before carton rounding.

Net area excludes zones receiving another finish.
The allowance represents cuts and layout, not a universal recommendation.

Caveats

Pattern, room shape, board or tile size, defects, and offcut reuse affect waste.
Transitions, underlayment, adhesive, trim, preparation, and attic stock are separate.
