Formula

Purchase area = max(perimeter x height - openings, 0) x (1 + waste).

Worked example

108 ft of wall at 9 ft is 972 sq ft. Minus 140 sq ft of openings gives 832 sq ft; with 10% allowance, plan 915.2 sq ft before package rounding.

Assumptions

  • Perimeter covers faces receiving the same material.
  • Average height is appropriate only for the grouped faces.
  • Opening subtraction follows the selected assembly's rules.

Caveats

  • Gables, bays, trim, laps, exposure, corners, starter, flashing, and transitions are separate.
  • Manufacturer coverage can differ from nominal panel area.
  • Water, air, fire, wind, and fastening design require review.
