Baseline wall-stud calculator

Estimate repeated stud positions for straight wall runs in imperial or metric units.

Direct answer

Divide wall length by on-center spacing, round up, and add one end position. Treat corners, intersections, openings, blocking, plates, bracing, and engineered framing as separate additions.

Formula

Baseline positions = ceiling(wall length / spacing) + 1; total = baseline positions x identical wall runs.

Worked example

A 24 ft wall at 16 in on center gives ceiling(288 / 16) + 1 = 19 baseline positions.

Assumptions

  • Each input is one uninterrupted straight run.
  • Spacing begins at one end.
  • All repeated runs use the same length and spacing.

Caveats

  • This is not a framing design or final material order.
  • Openings and intersections usually add pieces.
  • Member size, grade, species, fastening, bracing, loads, and code review are excluded.
