How to draw a floor plan without CAD experience

Draw the exterior shell first, type exact dimensions instead of dragging to a visual guess, then add interior walls, openings, and furniture in that order. Every step should be a number you can defend, which is what separates a usable plan from a sketch.

Planning workflow

  1. Choose your unit system once and keep every entry in it; mixing feet and metres mid-plan is the most common source of drift.
  2. Draw the exterior envelope as a closed loop and set its overall dimensions numerically.
  3. Add interior partitions with their thickness set explicitly, working from the largest divisions to the smallest.
  4. Place doors and windows with a measured distance from a named corner, not by eye.
  5. Add furniture and fixtures last, and use them to test clearance rather than to decorate the drawing.

Formula or decision logic

Precision comes from typed input, not from zoom level. A wall dragged to look like 12 ft on a screen at typical zoom is accurate to roughly the pixel size in model units: at a scale where one pixel represents 20 mm, a dragged wall carries up to 20 mm of error per endpoint, and a chain of ten such walls can accumulate 200 mm or more. Typing the dimension makes the error zero regardless of zoom. Where a dimension is genuinely unknown, enter your best estimate and label it as an estimate so it does not silently become a decision.

Worked planning example

A 32 ft by 24 ft shell is drawn by entering both dimensions rather than dragging. A 4 in partition placed 13 ft from the west wall leaves 32 - 13 - 0.333 = 18 ft 8 in for the second zone, which the plan reports directly. Changing the partition to 14 ft updates the remaining zone to 17 ft 8 in without redrawing anything, because the geometry stores real dimensions rather than screen positions.
