The kitchen work triangle, and when to ignore it

How the sink-cooktop-refrigerator triangle works as a planning check, where it breaks down, and what to test instead.

Direct answer

The work triangle measures the path between the sink, the cooking surface, and the refrigerator. Treat it as one diagnostic among several: it catches long walks and crossed paths in single-cook kitchens, but it says nothing about zones, two-cook conflicts, or landing space beside appliances.

Planning workflow

  1. Place the sink first, since plumbing and window position constrain it more than anything else.
  2. Place the cooking surface and its ventilation route, then the refrigerator with its door swing and approach side.
  3. Draw the three connecting legs and measure them center to center of each appliance front.
  4. Test the paths people actually walk: entry to refrigerator, sink to dishwasher, cooking surface to serving point.
  5. Reserve landing space on both sides of the cooking surface and beside the refrigerator before adding cabinetry.

Formula or decision logic

Measure each leg from the front center of one appliance to the front center of the next. Legs that are very short crowd the work; legs that are very long turn every task into a walk. The classic guidance keeps each leg within a moderate range and the three legs summed within a total, but the numbers vary by source and none of them are code. More useful is the crossing test: no leg should be cut by a through-traffic route, and no appliance door should open into a leg. In a two-cook kitchen, replace the triangle with zones - prep, cook, clean, store - and check that two people can work without occupying the same floor area.

Worked planning example

An L-shaped kitchen puts the sink under the window, the range 8 ft along the adjacent leg, and the refrigerator 5 ft from the sink on the return. The legs are 8 ft, 5 ft, and roughly 9 ft 5 in, which is workable. But the back door sits between the sink and the range, so every trip to the garden crosses the busiest leg. Moving the refrigerator to the opposite wall removes the crossing at the cost of a longer refrigerator-to-sink leg - a trade the triangle alone would have scored as worse.
