Direct answer

Plan each support space around the full operating envelope of equipment and storage, not its closed footprint. Keep noisy, wet, hot, or high-load functions visible in the adjacency plan.

Planning workflow

  1. List equipment dimensions, open positions, service connections, and maintenance access.
  2. Separate clean work, dirty work, storage, and circulation zones.
  3. Check acoustic, moisture, heat, ventilation, lighting, and power assumptions.
  4. Reserve a path for replacement equipment and future configuration changes.

Formula or decision logic

Required planning depth equals equipment depth + connection allowance + operating clearance + opposing storage depth where applicable. If the door or circulation path occupies that same space, model the open states together rather than assuming they occur separately.

Worked planning example

A 34-inch-deep front-loading washer plus a 6-inch connection allowance and a selected 36-inch operating zone needs 76 inches from the back wall before opposing storage. A 20-inch-deep shelf across a 7-foot room leaves only 64 inches, so the shelf, appliance orientation, or room depth must change.
