Drywall sheet planning calculator
Estimate sheets from total wall-face length, height, openings, sheet coverage, layers, and waste.
Direct answer
Calculate gross finish-face area, subtract valid openings, multiply by layers and explicit waste, divide by actual sheet area, and round up to whole sheets.

Sheets = ceiling(((face length x height - openings) x layers x (1 + waste)) / sheet area).
Worked example
80 ft of wall face at 8 ft high, minus 60 sq ft of openings, is 580 sq ft. With one layer and 10% waste, 638 / 32 = 19.94, so plan 20 sheets.
Assumptions
- Length represents finish faces, not unique wall centerlines.
- Openings are subtracted only when the assembly omits board there.
- Sheet coverage is the selected product's actual face area.
Caveats
- Layout, seams, offcut reuse, breakage, rated assemblies, and wet areas change quantities.
- Fasteners, tape, compound, corner bead, blocking, and finish are separate.
- Verify the assembly and purchase plan locally.
