Sheathing and drywall coverage planning
Move from gross faces to net area, sheet layout, seams, layers, waste, and package-rounded purchase quantities.
Direct answer
Measure each covered face, subtract only openings the assembly truly omits, multiply by layers, then divide by actual sheet coverage and round up. Keep layout waste and fire, moisture, structural, and finish requirements visible.
Planning workflow
- Separate exterior sheathing, interior wall faces, ceilings, wet areas, and rated assemblies.
- Measure gross area and list each valid opening subtraction.
- Multiply by required layers and divide by the selected sheet's actual area.
- Add explicit layout waste and review seams, blocking, fastening, and product suitability.
Formula or decision logic
Net area = gross covered area - valid openings. Required sheet-equivalents = net area x layers x (1 + waste) / sheet area. Purchase sheets = ceiling(required sheet-equivalents). A tiny opening may cost more labor to cut than material it saves, so subtraction rules belong to the assembly, not a global switch.
Worked planning example
One 24 ft by 8 ft wall face is 192 sq ft. Two 3 ft by 5 ft openings reduce it to 162 sq ft. With one layer, 10% waste, and 32 sq ft sheets, 162 x 1.10 / 32 = 5.57, so the planning purchase quantity is 6 sheets. Opposite faces are calculated separately.
Limitations and review boundary
- Sheet orientation, seams, offcut reuse, and handling affect real waste.
- Rated, structural, wet, exterior, and tile-backer assemblies need product-specific review.
- Fasteners, tape, compound, trim, and blocking are separate quantities.
