Concrete volume from explicit geometry

Calculate rectangular planning volumes while naming excavation, reinforcement, thickening, and field variation as separate work.

Direct answer

For a simple rectangular slab, multiply length by width by thickness in consistent units, then convert to cubic yards or cubic meters. Add thickened edges, footings, grade beams, piers, steps, and waste as separate volumes rather than pretending the slab rectangle includes them.

Planning workflow

  1. Split the concept into shapes with a known length, width, and depth or section area.
  2. Calculate each volume in one consistent unit system.
  3. Sum the shapes, then show the user-selected placement allowance separately.
  4. Confirm mix, reinforcement, joints, subbase, moisture, weather, access, and order quantity professionally.

Formula or decision logic

Rectangular volume V = L x W x T. Imperial cubic yards = cubic feet / 27; metric volume remains cubic meters. For a continuous footing, V = section width x section depth x centerline length. Do not double-count intersecting volumes.

Worked planning example

A 24 ft by 30 ft slab at 4 inches thick is 24 x 30 x (4/12) = 240 cubic feet, or 8.89 cubic yards before any allowance. A thickened perimeter is not included. If it is required, calculate only its additional cross-section to avoid counting the base slab twice.
