Planning a lighting layout room by room

Lay out ambient, task, and accent lighting from the activities in each room instead of spacing downlights on a grid.

Direct answer

Plan lighting in three layers - ambient, task, and accent - and place each layer from what happens in the room. Grid-spacing recessed fixtures produces even ceiling brightness and poor task light, because the person working at a counter stands between the fixture and the work.

Planning workflow

  1. Mark the work surfaces, reading positions, mirrors, and stairs in each room before choosing any fixture.
  2. Place task lighting directly over or in front of each of those positions, not behind the person using it.
  3. Add ambient light to fill the room, then check whether the task layer already covers part of that job.
  4. Group fixtures into switched zones that match how the room is actually used, and mark three-way locations.
  5. Check every fixture against ceiling structure, ducts, insulation depth, and clearance from combustible material.

Formula or decision logic

A common ambient starting layout spaces ceiling fixtures at roughly the ceiling height above the work plane, with half that spacing to the walls: at an 8 ft ceiling and a 2 ft 6 in work plane, that is about 5 ft 6 in between fixtures and 2 ft 9 in to the wall. Fixture count along a wall is then ceiling((wall length - 2 x edge offset) / spacing) + 1. Use that only to seed the layout. The real check is per position: a downlight centered over the front edge of a counter lights the work; the same fixture centered on the room lights the cook's back. Fixture output, beam angle, and reflectance decide actual light levels and cannot be inferred from spacing alone.

Worked planning example

A 14 ft long kitchen wall with an 8 ft ceiling suggests 5 ft 6 in spacing and a 2 ft 9 in edge offset. That gives ceiling((14 - 5.5) / 5.5) + 1 = ceiling(1.545) + 1 = 3 fixtures on that run. But the base cabinets are 24 in deep, so a fixture centered on the room lands behind anyone at the counter. Shifting the row to sit 18 in from the wall puts the light on the work surface, and under-cabinet strips then handle the area the wall cabinets shade.

Limitations and review boundary

  • Spacing conventions do not predict illuminance; that needs fixture photometry and a lighting calculation.
  • Recessed fixtures interact with insulation, air sealing, and fire-rated assemblies and have specific listings.
  • Circuit design, control wiring, and load calculations require a qualified electrician and the locally adopted electrical code.
