Roof pitch: choosing a slope and living with the consequences

How rise over run converts to degrees and a slope factor, and what changes across covering, area, cost, and usable space when the pitch changes.

Direct answer

Roof pitch is rise over a fixed run, usually 12. It sets the angle, the slope factor that converts plan area into actual roof area, which coverings are permitted, how much attic volume exists, and how the roof reads from the street. Changing pitch changes all of those at once.

Planning workflow

  1. Check what the roof covering you want requires as a minimum slope, since that often sets the floor for the decision.
  2. Test the pitch against the building span to see the resulting ridge height and total building height.
  3. Convert plan area to roof area with the slope factor before estimating covering, underlayment, or sheathing.
  4. Check attic or room-in-roof volume, and whether the pitch creates usable space or only air.
  5. Review the pitch against local snow, wind, and drainage conditions with a qualified designer.

Formula or decision logic

Angle = arctan(rise / run). Slope factor = sqrt(1 + (rise / run)^2), and roof area = plan area x slope factor. Ridge height above the wall plate = (span / 2) x (rise / run). The slope factor grows slowly at low pitches and quickly at steep ones: 4-in-12 is 1.054, 6-in-12 is 1.118, 9-in-12 is 1.250, and 12-in-12 is 1.414. So moving from 4-in-12 to 12-in-12 adds about 34 percent to every roof-area quantity while tripling the ridge height over the same span.

Worked planning example

A 40 ft by 28 ft building has 1,120 sq ft of roof plan area. At 4-in-12 the slope factor is 1.054, giving 1,180 sq ft of roof surface and a ridge 14 x 4 / 12 = 4 ft 8 in above the plate. At 9-in-12 the slope factor is 1.250, giving 1,400 sq ft - 220 sq ft more covering, underlayment, and sheathing - and a ridge 10 ft 6 in above the plate. The steeper roof buys a usable room in the roof; it also adds height that local limits may not allow.
