Direct answer

Work from the top down: decking span sets joist spacing, joist span sets beam position, beam span sets post spacing, and post positions set the footings. Board quantities follow last, from the deck dimension across the boards divided by board width plus gap.

Planning workflow

  1. Decide the decking material and direction, since its allowable span sets the maximum joist spacing.
  2. Set joist spacing, then find the joist span that spacing and material allow, which locates the beam.
  3. Place posts along the beam within the beam's allowable span, and mark a footing under each post.
  4. Check the ledger connection to the house separately, or design a freestanding deck if that connection is not viable.
  5. Convert the deck surface into board rows and linear length, then into whole stock lengths.

Formula or decision logic

Board rows = ceiling(deck width across the boards / (board width + gap)). A nominal 6 in board is 5.5 in actual, so with a 1/4 in gap each row covers 5.75 in, or 0.479 ft. Joist count for a simple field = ceiling(deck length along the joists / spacing) + 1, before doubled joists, blocking, and rim members. Diagonal decking increases board length and waste by the same slope factor used for roofs - sqrt(2), about 1.414, at 45 degrees - which is why a diagonal pattern is a material decision, not only an appearance one.

Worked planning example

A 16 ft by 12 ft deck with boards running the 16 ft direction needs ceiling(12 / 0.479) = 26 rows. At 16 ft per row and a 10 percent allowance, that is 457.6 linear ft of decking, which in 16 ft stock is 29 boards. Joists at 16 in on center across the 16 ft dimension give 192 / 16 = 12 spaces, so 13 joists before rim and doubled members. Turning the boards diagonally would raise the decking quantity by roughly 41 percent and add an angled cut at both ends of every board.

  • Ledger attachment, flashing, lateral load connection, guards, and stairs are safety-critical details outside this layout arithmetic.
