Model the full rough opening and movement envelope, not just the visible door, window, or stair symbol. Every opening interrupts an assembly and needs coordinated structure, water control, air control, fire, access, and local-code review.

Formula or decision logic
For an opening, net finish area may subtract rough-opening area only when the quantity formula explicitly permits it. For stairs, calculate a whole-number rise count, then verify actual rise, run, headroom, landings, and guard conditions as a connected geometry set. Passing arithmetic is not code approval.
Worked planning example
A 3 ft by 5 ft nominal window removes 15 sq ft from a simple siding-area estimate, but its trim, flashing, waste, and rough opening add other quantities. A stair fitting into the remaining floor opening can still fail headroom or structural coordination, so both elements stay linked to unresolved review flags.
