Nominal vs. actual lumber sizes, and why a 2x4 is not 2 in by 4 in
Read a lumber size chart correctly, and keep nominal names out of the geometry where actual dimensions belong.
Direct answer
Nominal sizes are names, not measurements. Dry dressed softwood lumber is smaller than its nominal name because it is surfaced after drying, so a nominal 2x4 measures 1.5 in by 3.5 in. Draw and calculate with the actual dimension; order with the nominal name.
Planning workflow
- Separate the two numbers in your notes: the nominal name you will order, and the actual dimension you will draw.
- Enter actual dimensions into wall thickness, framing depth, and clearance geometry.
- Check the moisture condition, since green and dry lumber are dressed to different sizes.
- Confirm the actual size for any product you have not used before, especially engineered and imported material.
- Record which dimension a quantity was derived from, so a later change to the product does not silently break the plan.
Formula or decision logic
For dry surfaced softwood, common nominal-to-actual pairs are 2x4 = 1.5 in x 3.5 in, 2x6 = 1.5 in x 5.5 in, 2x8 = 1.5 in x 7.25 in, 2x10 = 1.5 in x 9.25 in, and 2x12 = 1.5 in x 11.25 in. The pattern is a 0.5 in reduction up to nominal 6 in and a 0.75 in reduction above it, but the standard, not the pattern, is the authority. Wall thickness follows from the actual dimension plus finishes: a 2x4 wall with 1/2 in gypsum both sides is 3.5 + 0.5 + 0.5 = 4.5 in overall, which is why a 4 in partition drawn from the nominal name is 0.5 in wrong on every wall in the plan.
Worked planning example
A 30 ft interior run has six partitions drawn at a nominal 4 in each. Using the actual 4.5 in overall thickness instead adds 0.5 in per wall, or 3 in across the run. In a plan where the exterior span is fixed, those 3 in have to come out of the rooms - about 0.5 in from each of six rooms, or one room losing 3 in. Neither is a problem when it is found at the plan stage; both are a problem when they are found while setting cabinets.
Limitations and review boundary
- Actual sizes depend on the standard, the moisture condition, and the surfacing at the time of manufacture.
- Engineered lumber, timbers, and imported material follow different size conventions.
- Nothing here establishes structural capacity, which depends on species, grade, span, and load.
